Technical Editing Service

What is tech editing?

Technical editing service, or tech editing, is an extensive review of your quilt pattern to ensure it is as concise, correct, and user-friendly as possible. As many times as you may read and re-read it yourself, recognizing mistakes in your own work can be difficult. I offer a fresh perspective on your pattern, supporting you in minimizing the risk of errors and making sure your pattern is ready for your customers.

Specifically, I will perform a comprehensive review of your quilt pattern, including:

  • Verifying all maths, cutting instructions, piece counts, and fabric requirements

  • In-depth line editing, including grammar, spelling, alignment, and spacing

  • Offering re-write suggestions or wordsmithing for enhanced clarity

  • Ensuring style and formatting are consistent throughout

  • Reviewing diagrams, graphics, and assembly instructions

  • Maintaining YOUR voice throughout the pattern

How is tech editing different from pattern testing?

Pattern testing is also a great way to have more eyes on your design, but testers typically review your pattern for user experience, not detailed editing. You may continue using pattern testers in addition to tech editing services if you choose; it is entirely up to you! I do not make the quilts that I edit for, but I will cut and sew using my own materials to verify the pattern if needed and do not charge any material(s) fees.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE?

Each pattern varies based on the pattern's complexity and other factors. While there is no limit to the amount of time it may take to edit, most patterns take between 2-4 hours in total to review. The first pattern can sometimes take the longest as we get to know one another, asking and answering questions, and I get familiarized with your writing and pattern style. Turnaround time is usually five business days from when the pattern hits my inbox, unless otherwise discussed. I will send the completed edits back to you (the client); while we can conclude work there, many choose to make edits and send it back for one (or more) rounds of final revision(s). I will continue to work with you on your pattern until you are satisfied.

HOW DOES INVOICING WORK?

Invoices are sent at the conclusion of services and are due within 30 days or by your pattern release date, whichever is sooner. I charge an hourly rate which is discussed with clients before services begin. Rates are rounded to the lowest 5-minute interval. I track my time using a digital app, and I am always happy to share those openly with clients at invoicing. Included as part of my services is an additional 20 minutes of review at no charge before the invoice due date to review any further questions or changes after the initial edits. Be sure to ask me about a first-time client discount!

i have a PATTERN idea - Will you write IT for me?

Because maintaining your creative voice within your pattern is important to me, I currently offer pattern writing / ghostwriting services only to a limited number of clients. Please reach out with your inquiries.

DO YOU OFFER DESIGN SERVICES?

Yes! I would love to work with you to create pattern graphics, figures, or tables for you to insert into your pattern. Ask me about this service when you submit your edit request.

How do i SUBMIT my pattern for editing?

I would love to work with you! My preferred format for your completed pattern is an emailed PDF file, where I will use the Adobe Acrobat comments (highlights, sticky notes, and markup tools) to edit your pattern. I can work in other digital formats, too, upon request. If you are interested in learning more, please email me or complete the form below to get started!
